HDMI Standard on the way

In the next year you’ll be hearing about HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) which aims to cut down on the clutter of wires behind your television set.

The cable standard transmits uncompressed digital audio and video between your DVD player, A/V Reciever and your Television set. It also allows communications between devices so that settings can be shared between devices.

The connector is nice and small; about the size and shape of a USB connector, which will allow you to quickly plug and unplug from devices easily, without having to worry about multiple pin alignment (like the current SDI interface) or multiple connections (like the 5 wires for Component plus audio).

The first of these devices showed up on devices in the last couple of months, and you’ll see even more next year.
