Never Trust a Bot

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has been on a rampage trying to protect its artists from piracy. It uses a program, called a bot, to scan the Internet for keywords indicating that their material is available for download.

Unfortunately, one such search on the words “Usher” (an R&B artist) and “mp3” turned up a site containing a group of astronomers at Penn State University singing an a cappella song about a satellite and posted by Professor Peter Usher. Too late, the RIAA had already sent out a warning notice to the school. Ugh…
