VeriSign hijacks poor spellers

VeriSign, the company that has been given responsibility for assigning domain names (like www.joetek.com), is being crushed under complaints about their new “Site Finder” service. The service redirects users that misspell domains to their advertising-supported search site.

Professor David Farber of Carnegie Mellon University said VeriSign’s service was akin to running a dead- letter office for profit. “This can be compared to giving the post office the right to readdress the letter, and to sell all the information from handling it,” like names and addresses.
